RMT - Real Mean Terrorists, the new form of $$$ trade

RMT's onry!! Cloull's account was hacked a while back but he remained vigilant and won the race to change passwords. He removed what he believed was all of the infection in the form of key loggers that were able to be found. According to Cloull he hasn't visited the ffxi.somepage.com website and was unsure of the source of the infection, only to find that he is once again locked out of his own charecters, loosing millions of gil worth of equiptment and time invested. It seems that there is a serious problem among the populous of FFXI gamers and the security risk involved with the near mandatory research involved in playing the game due to the secrecy of Square-enix and the game mechanics / quest lines. SqE. is investigating and is remaining quiet as to the steps on how they are going to catch and remove these virtual terrorists, which in my opinion is a smart move. they did recently add to the official home page that they have banned a numerous ammount of account related to the trade of real money for virtual currency known as gil. The term RMT refers to the act of exchanging real life money for said gil, usually they would use hacks or 3rd party tools to camp named monsters and sell the Extremely rare item on the auction house for large profit; sometimes even buying out the ones for sale only to relist for large inflated prices. Other tactics where equally unscrupulous such as MPKing (massive player killing) to claim enemies, botting named monsters, or even running gambling or teleport services. Now they have finally been exterminated to so low of numbers they are loosing hand over fist, SqE added Rare/Exclusive versions of the main items to keep the botting down, banning large amounts of accounts, goblin hunters to fishing spots, and added enemy despawn to name a few, But Hacking into accounts to sell players belonging to other players is EXTREME and it means they are desperate. Is this going to be like real terrorists where desperation is a powerful fuel for them or will SqE and the player base win against these Malicious Greedy Bastards. Only time will tell, in the mean time, good luck cloull and i hope for the best friend.

*Update*

Crayne told me by checking my LS Community Profile (that shows what you are currently wearing), that I am in my Warp Cudgel, Garuda's Dagger, XBow, OHat, 2x Coral Earrings, Sandy Aketon, War Gloves, ToAU Ring, Life Belt, and Bounding Boots. I'm missing my Harpe (500k), Chiv Chain (200k), Littledarc's Scorpion Harness (200k), Woodsman Ring (190k), Amemet +1 (180k), and Feral Trousers (lol30k). I'm assuming that everything else worth money is missing as well such as my Haubergeon, other Woodsman, and such.

Anyways, on to the real update. I called POL 5 times to get 4 different people (hung up on the guy I got before) to have them all tell me that the current credit card information is wrong, as well as the billing address, and that I'd need those (at least the CC info) to verify the account to get a new password.

EDIT: They can use your POL registration code over your address, but they need your CURRENT credit card information to give you a new password to access your account. They could even see the credit card I was using, but as it isn't the current card, they can't do anything about it because of their policy.

They then went on to tell me that I could call the local authorities and place a Online ID Theft/Fraud Claim, and I would need to get a court order to have the information released to me. So I called the township police, who referred me to the county police, who then referred me to the state police (which I will be calling here soon, was updating first). The state police have an online theft department that would be able to prosecute a company based in CA.

I'll update as I go, I just want my character back, the junk on him I can always get again. I hope you guys are having a good time. ^^

P.S.
While I don't want anything like this to happen to anyone else, it's best to be prepared for anything before hand to save some stress, so gather your information before hand and update it as needed.
- Credit Card billing statements
- Account address
- POL registration code (not FFXI codes, your POL code in the back of your XI booklet)
- Credit Card number

Even though they cannot currently give away the account information w/out the CC number, it's best to keep this information on hand to make it easier for the police if you decide to try to obtain a court order.

*Update*

I called the State Police, who now referred me to the Township Police, who have to handle the initial claim, and then THEY can call the State Police for any questions.

*Update*

My uncle is a Sergeant in Ferguson Township, he's gonna help me out as much as he can. There's very little I can do while I'm in Maine, so I gave my uncle all the information he'd need, and he's gonna call POL from the office and see if he can't get any more information out of them. He said that companies like POL would have caller ID and getting a call from a police officer/station would put more weight behind the claim than any random person.

As of yet, no further update, I'll have to wait till Wednesday until he can call it in.
